Funeral Celebrant & Celebrations of Life: A Beautiful Farewell

Creating Farewells That Honour the Whole Person

You've found yourself needing to arrange a funeral. You're not going down the traditional "church and vicar" route, but you're wondering what other options exist.

The answer? Quite a few, actually. And they're all more personal and meaningful than you might think.

As an experienced funeral celebrant conducting services across South London, Essex , and East Anglia, I specialise in compassionate, personalised ceremonies that celebrate the whole person – the quirks, the humour, the life well-lived.

Your Choices for a Meaningful Farewell

Funeral

Traditional Funeral Service

A classic crematorium or burial service, but made personal. We meet, I get to know your person, and I create a beautiful, bespoke farewell that truly reflects who they were. You're not limited to 45 minutes if you want longer. You're not stuck with generic words.

From £300 (single slot) or £450 (double slot)

Memorial

Celebration of Life / Memorial Service

Separate the actual cremation (direct cremations are increasingly popular) from the celebration. This gives us freedom to create something truly special in a meaningful location – a social club, country barn, woodland, pub, community centre, even your own front room - wherever feels right.
Time isn't an issue. It can take as long as it needs. Everyone who wants to participate has space to do so. It becomes a memorable gathering that people will talk about for years.

From £400 (individually costed based on requirements)

Plan

Living Funeral

An incredibly powerful and brave choice. If you know your time is limited, we can create the ultimate send-off party together. How amazing to be told just how important you are to so many people while you're still here to hear it.
I recently created a short film with a client who wanted to tell everyone she loved how she really felt. The surprise at her funeral service when she came on screen saying "I'll bet you weren't expecting to see me today!" was extraordinary.

Why Choose an Independent Funeral Celebrant?

  • icon-tamara

    You Get Time

Unlike funeral arrangers who might have to rush through meetings, I take as long as needed to really understand your person. We'll laugh, cry, remember – whatever feels right.

  • icon-tamara

    You Get Honesty

I'll tell you if that poem you're considering is a bit mawkish. I'll suggest alternatives. I'll make sure we get the tone exactly right.

  • icon-tamara

    You Get Creativity

Want to include their beloved budgie? Their favorite inappropriate joke? A flash mob? (Yes, really – we got 180 people dancing around a coffin once.) Let's talk about it.

  • icon-tamara

    You Get Someone Who Cares

By the time we're done, I'll know your person almost as well as you do. And I'll be determined to give them the farewell they deserve.

How We Work Together

  • icon-tamara

    The First Meeting

We meet at your home, the funeral arranger’s office, or wherever you feel comfortable. I'll ask questions, listen to stories, laugh at memories, and probably shed a few tears with you.
This takes as long as it needs – usually a couple of hours, sometimes more.

    Gathering the Story

Sometimes one meeting gives me everything I need. Sometimes I'll ask permission to contact other family members, friends, or colleagues to build a fuller picture.

    I'm looking for:

    • Who they really were (not just the respectable bits)
    • What made them laugh
    • Their quirks and peculiarities - I was told recently about a gent in South London who had a crocodile that he took for walks on a lead and kept in the bath; now that added spice to his life story.
    • The things they loved
    • The things they didn’t
    • The people who mattered
    • The life they built
  • icon-tamara

    Creating the Service

I'll craft a ceremony that captures their essence. You'll receive the complete script to review, and we'll make any adjustments needed until it feels exactly right.

  • icon-tamara

    The Day Itself

I'll be there early, ready to support you through it. I'll coordinate with the funeral director, brief anyone doing tributes, and ensure everything flows smoothly.
You'll know throughout that you're supported and that your person is being honored properly.

What Makes My Approach Different

  • icon-tamara

    I Don't Judge Anyone

I’m not interested in how much money you have or haven’t got: whether you left school early because of “wagging” off all the time or have more degrees than you can shake a stick at: everyone gets the same respect and attention.

  • icon-tamara

    I Find Everyone Interesting

Genuinely. No matter how "ordinary" someone seems, there's always a fascinating story. We all have one.

  • icon-tamara

    I'm Honest About Grief

I won't pretend death is easy or comfortable. But I will help you create something that feels empowering and right.

  • icon-tamara

    I Create Safe Space

For laughter, tears, anger, relief – whatever you need to feel. Funerals should allow the full range of human emotion.

  • icon-tamara

    I Make It Personal

No templates, no generic "good person who will be missed" nonsense. Real stories, real people, real farewells.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can you arrange a funeral service?

Most funerals happen within 2-3 weeks of death; it can be longer with the involvement of the coroner. I can usually accommodate your dates, though early notice of your preferred date is always helpful if possible. Most things can be negotiated with the funeral arranger,if you are using one.
